Seed size variation: magnitude,distribution, and ecological correlates   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Summary We examined seed-mass variation in 39 species (46 populations) of plants in eastern-central Illinois, USA. The coefficient of variation of seed mass commonly exceeded 20%. Significant variation in mean seed mass occurred among conspecific plants in most species sampled (by hierarchical ANOVA), averaging 38% of total variance. For most species, within-plant variation was the larger component of total variance, averaging 62% of total variance. Variation in seed mass among fruits within crops was significant in most species tested.We conclude that variation in seed mass among and within plants is widespread and common. There was little evidence of trade-offs between number of seeds and mean or variance of seed mass, and little correlational evidence of local competition for maternal resources. No consistent ecological (dispersal mode and growth form) correlates of variance of seed mass were evident.  相似文献

The in vitro acetylation of HMG proteins was studied using liver slices of young (18-week) and old (138-week) male rats. Acetylation of total HMG proteins is lower in old age. The incorporation of (14C) acetate into individual HMG proteins varies remarkably with advancing age. Whereas acetylation of high mol. wt. proteins (HMG 1 and 2) is higher, that of low mol. wt. proteins (HMG 14 and 17) is lower in the liver of young rats as compared to the old ones. Spermine stimulates the acetylation of HMG 1 and 14 in young and HMG 1, 2 and 14 in old age. It inhibits the acetylation of HMG 17 in both ages. Dexamethasone decreases the level of incorporation of (14C) into HMG 1 and 17 in young and HMG 14 and 17 in old rats. On the other hand, it stimulates the acetylation of HMG 14 by two-fold in young and that of HMG 1 and 2 by more than three-fold in old rats. Such alteration in the acetylation of HMG proteins may account for age-related changes in the structure and function of chromatin.  相似文献

In vivo protein synthesis rates in various brain regions (cerebral cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and striatum) of 4-, 12-, and 24-month-old rats were examined after injection of a flooding dose of labeled valine. The incorporation of labeled valine into proteins of mitochondrial, microsomal, and cytosolic fractions from cerebral cortex and cerebellum was also measured. At all ages examined, the incorporation rate was 0.5% per hour in cerebral cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, and hypothalamus and 0.4% per hour in striatum. Of the subcellular fractions examined, the microsomal proteins were synthesized at the highest rate, followed by cytosolic and mitochondrial proteins. The results obtained indicate that the average synthesis rate of proteins in the various brain regions and subcellular fractions examined is fairly constant and is not significantly altered in the 4 to 24-month period of life of rats.A preliminary report of these results was previously presented at: WFN-ESN Joint Meeting on: Cerebral Metabolism in Aging and Neurological Disorders, Baden, August 28–31, 1986.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative changes of mitochondrial membrane proteind during aging were investigated. Free (non-synaptic) mitochondria were purified from rat cerebellum at different ages (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 months). Mitochondrial outer membrane (OM), inner membrane (IM) and matrix (MX) were separated and the proteins were extracted and analyzed by gel-electrophoresis.After staining, the gels were scanned densitometrically to quantify the proteins. No significant changes in the quantity of OM or MX protein subunits were observed, while serveral statistically significant quantitative changes in IM proteins with age were found. These age-dependent modifications of inner membrane mitochondrial proteins may play an important role in energy transduction, transport systems and regulatory enzymatic activities in mitochondria.  相似文献

The germination of Amaranthus paniculatus seeds was inhibited by applying paclobutrazol, a specific inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis. This inhibition was markedly counteracted by gibberellin A3 (GA3), suggesting that endogenous gibberellins are required for germination in this species. The inhibitory effect of paclobutrazol was also overcome by ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) or the precursor of ethylene biosynthesis, ACC (1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid). Thus the physiological effect of gibberellin can be mimicked by ethylene released from ethephon or synthesised from exogenous ACC. Summary A methionine-rich 10 kDa zein storage protein from maize was isolated and the sequence of the N-terminal 30 amino acids was determined. Based on the amino acid sequence, two mixed oligonucleotides were synthesized and used to probe a maize endosperm cDNA library. A fulllength cDNA clone encoding the 10 kDa zein was isolated by this procedure. The nucleotide sequence of the cDNA clone predicts a polypeptide of 129 amino acids, preceded by a signal peptide of 21 amino acids. The predicted polypeptide is unique in its extremely high content of methionine (22.5%). The maize inbred line BSSS-53, which has increased seed methionine due to overproduction of this protein, was compared to W23, a standard inbred line. Northern blot analysis showed that the relative RNA levels for the 10 kDa zein were enhanced in developing seeds of BSSS-53, providing a molecular basis for the overproduction of the protein. Southern blot analysis indicated that there are one or two 10 kDa zein genes in the maize genome.  相似文献

Summary Leucaena leucocephala generally produces pods with more than 7–9 seeds. This is regulated by the stigmatic inhibition of pollen grain germination when the pollen grains are less than a critical number in the stigma. This number-dependent inhibition of pollen grain germination is effected by a pH-dependent proteinaceous inhibitor active at the stigmatic pH. Only when the pollen grains in the stigma exceed the critical number, they inactivate the inhibitor by collectively raising the stigmatic pH and thus overcoming the inhibition. The adaptive significance of such pre-fertilization mechanism for the female in inciting mate competition among the pollen grains is discussed. The evolution of en masse pollen grain dispersal units is explained as a sexual selection strategy by males in response to such stigmatic inhibition by females.  相似文献

Summary Dalbergia sissoo, a wind-dispersed tropical tree, shows a positively skewed distribution of seeds per pod. This is attributed to the enhanced dispersal advantage of few-seeded pods due to their reduced wing loading (ratio of weight to pod surface area) and low settling velocity. The proximate mechanisms causing the positively skewed distribution were investigated. The distribution could not be attributed to the distribution pattern of ovule number per ovary, pollen grain limitation, lack of ovule fertilization, or post-fertilization elimination of many-seeded pods. Rather, it was caused by the post-fertilization abortion of seeds within a pod 2 weeks after fertilization. This intra-pod seed abortion (IPSA) is due to a dominance hierarchy of fertilized ovules from the distal (near stigma) to the basal end, generated by the temporal differences in fertilization. The dominant developing seeds at the distal end cause the abortion of others through the production and diffusion of an aborting agent. When the dominance hierarchy of the siblings is not intense, pods are formed with more than one seed. We argue that the positively skewed distribution of seeds per pod is not due to maternal regulation but is a result of sibling rivalry. We propose that this sibling rivalry is generated by genetic differences in pollen grain fitness and disucss the results in the context of parent-offspring conflict.  相似文献

Summary The water balance of three different sized coexisting species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys merriami ca. 39 g;Perognathus fallax ca. 23 g;Perognathus longimembris ca. 9 g) was assessed while consuming two different diets (either wheat or hulled sunflower) at ambient temperatures of 15–30°C. The metabolism of wheat as the sole food source was calculated to provide a greater metabolic water production (MWP) than the consumption of sunflower seed because of their different composition. The state of water balance was assessed by measuring urine concentrations and body weight maintenance on each diet at each temperature. Both measures showed that (i) all species were able to maintain a more positive water on the higher MWP seed, (ii) for all species there was an ambient temperature above which water balance could no longer be maintained, (iii) that this temperature was higher with the higher MWP food source and (iv) water regulatory efficiency was negatively correlated with body mass.Dipodomys showed a reduced digestive efficiency compared toPerognathus. When presented with both seedsDipodomys showed no preference for either seed irrespective of the state of water balance whilst thePerognathus species showed a tendency for an increased preference for the high MWP food source at the higher ambient temperatures. Expression sites of genes encoding (13,14)--glucan 4-glucanohydrolase (EC 3.2.1.73) have been mapped in germinated barley grains (Hordeum vulgare L.) by hybridization histochemistry. A32P-labelled cDNA (copy DNA) probe was hybridized to cryosections of intact barley grains to localize complementary mRNAs. No mRNA encoding (13,14)--glucanase is detected in ungerminated grain. Expression of (13,14)--glucanase genes is first detected in the scutellum after 1 d and is confined to the epithelial layer. At this stage, no expression is apparent in the aleurone. After 2 d, levels of (13,14)--glucanase mRNA decrease in the scutellar epithelium but increase in the aleurone. In the aleurone layer, induction of (13,14)--glucanase gene expression, as measured by mRNA accumulation, progresses from the proximal to distal end of the grain as a front moving away from, and parallel to, the face of the scutellum.Abbreviations cDNA copy DNA - RNase ribonuclease  相似文献
